Re: (ET) 2-stage Snowblower

Looking through the archives, I see this topic comes up every few years. Rob is the first I've encountered that has actually done it. I think a two stage blower on the ET would be near perfect for snow removal.

My other option is a 3-point hitch blower for my Johnny Popper, but that's  pretty expensive and you're running backwards the whole time.

If I go through with it, I'll document it.

Sounds like a great project.  I would like to build one myself!

I found a 42" MTD 190-032. It is a bit different as it has right angle drive (so the gas drive belt is in one plane). If it was a gear reducer that could be just right. I think I may go for it.

I have a 1/4 mile drive and I have done it with the GE blower, but with effort. My neighbor then bought a Massey diesel several years ago with front snowplow and I used that until he sold it last year. I was able to keep up with the GE blade through last year's snows, but as it gets deep, the drive gets narrower  and narrower! And if it's snowing heavy - it's a full time job to stay ahead of it. I'm amazed the batteries kept up so well (they are only a couple year's old). I see videos of two stage blowers and I know that is what I need.

Of course probably half of this is the back-yard mechanic in me looking for a new project.... like I need one.....

Belt reduction.  I did some checking at the time to estimate the speed on a gas blower and matched it.  I intentionally chose a 2 stage with a small impeller, I probably worried to much about keeping the impeller small.  Works great.  I had a 200 foot driveway with a big 4 car wide end.  New house with 180 foot drive no problem at all with battery life.  I store the machine in the garage at 40 to 50F.  Happy with the e tech motor.  Allowed for a short length.  You could use your motor.  Very powerful, capable of 15 hp.

Cool - did you have to gear down the motor or was it direct connect? Any idea on the RPM?

This is encouraging!  I've been watching for a used one without much luck (well, a cheap  one), so before I plunk down a lot of money I want to have a decent feeling it may work.

I had good luck converting a 2 stage MTD/Sears and using an e tech motor.  Have used for 12 years.

Has anyone converted a gas-lawn tractor 2-stage blower accessory to use on the ET? The GE single-stage just doesn't work well in northern VA, with (generally)  wetter snows; I also have a gravel drive and gravel tends to the caught up in the blades.

It seems like converting ought to work. One thing I don't know is what RPM the gearbox of a two-stage is designed for and how well that matches up to the GE snowblower motor (which I have).
