That's its nature, I guess.  Recently I ran across a Youtube clip by 
accident (while looking for something entirely different).  Fellow bought 
an 
old Model A Ford.  His friend warned him not to try running it until he'd 
changed the oil.  When he took out the drain plug, hardly anything came 
out! 
He dropped the pan and found that the oil had turned to sludge.  The clip 
shows him dragging a (gloved) hand through the glop.  Bleah.

Our machines maybe aren't that old, but they do get gummed up from the 
ancient lubricants applied at the factory.
