(ET) Batteries

Whose batteries are they using? AGM's are starting to show up un PV grid tie/off grid apps a lot more now and I hear Full River (China) are doing very well. I think Rolls has AGM's now but my system still uses Rolls L/A batts. Truthfully I'd rather not have L/A's in my ET. Not just the filling but I'm building one for the lady and AGM's are better for her. No mess and safe in enclosed spaces. I had to build a special battery box for my PV system, too cold to keep them outside in the winter and inside means a venting system to keep fumes out of the basement.

Expensive batteries are a given for electrics today, still better than gas in my view.

I did a google on it, couple write ups, one said expected price was
$4500. The John Deere electric 90 used 3 marine deep cycle batts (like
$200 for all three) and ran longer then that jobber.

Not cost, that's for sure, but lack of maintenance makes sense. How often
do you water the battery in your mobile phone or laptop? I'd guess that
they think (or maybe even know from surveys) that users expect the same plug-
and-forget behavior in this mower.

Besides, how many owners do the required maintenance on their ICE mowers?
Do you really think they'd want to check batteries?

I just hope the charger supplied takes good care of those pricey batteries.
Outdoor power equipment manufacturers don't have a very good record in that
area. No, scratch that. Indoor or outdoor, almost _every_ rechargeable
gadget's charger murders its battery.

Geo, you make some good points about acreage with the ET. In fact I'm
thinking about using Full River AGM's in my restore 12V at 105aH and not 6
L/A 105's. I know I'll get less run time but I only have about an acre to
mow. I asked the Cadet Zero dealer for pricing (email him), he beat around
the bush and never gave a price or the type of batteries the Cadet uses.
I'm
not sure of the hold up quality of the Cadet either. I've heard they aren't
made the way they used to be.

Looks good. There is a good advertising video on Youtube at :
http://youtu.be/TdqLy2Irp4k.

Their advertising is very similar to the Elec-Trak ads - big hoopla about
"quiet - no gas - no belts - mows for pennies a day - etc", and not a word
about the batteries and what it costs to replace them. That is probably
why
so many Elec-Traks were only used for several years - until the owner had
to shell out for new batteries.

Nice looking machine, but I continue to be disappointed over the run-time
of
modern electrics (Hustler Zeon is the same). This is a one acre machine.
Seems hard to believe you would really need a zero-turn mower for a one
acre
yard front and back. You are not going to use this on a large yard or in a
commercial lawn business. A 40 year old Elec-Trak with the Aux. Power
Pack
Booster (AP84) on it was advertised at nearly 5 acres- my experience is
about 3 1/2 but all the same that's 3+ recharges on the Cub or Hustler.
Also with zero-turns the lack of attachments stands-out. I'll stick with
Ole Yella' for now. : )

I've been using East Penn Deka Dominator gel batteries in my E15 as long as
I've had it (1998?). These batteries have a reputation for long life.
Mine
are just now starting to decline in capacity, but they're still good enough
for my needs so far.

I use six 12v group 24s in series-parallel, but EP makes a golf car sized
gel battery. It's the 8GGC2. Capacity is significantly lower than a
flooded battery, 180ah and 92 minutes at 75 amps, so make sure that's
enough
for you.

Note that I'm talking here about East Penn's gel batteries, which use a
design licensed from Sonnenschein. I don't have direct experience with
their AGMs, but I seem to recall hearing that they don't last as long.

I forgot to mention that you shouldn't charge these (or any battery other
than flooded lead acid) with the GE charger. Yes, I know that at least one
person is using it for flooded NiCd batteries, but I still don't recommend
that.

Using the GE charger for gel batteries is apt to murder them in short
order.
You need to limit finishing voltage to between 42.3 and 42.9 volts. I
charge mine with 3 individual 12v automatic chargers.

I converted my Electric Ox to use 4x12V 135Ah AGMs from Universal
Battery. Why? I hate acid mist. It corrodes everything.

Much as I love Deka gels, I felt they wouldn't do in this application
because of the snowblower, which has an unregulated motor, so there is a
huge current every time you switch it on. I didn't think gels would
survive very long. David, do you have a snowblower on your E15?

After 5 years, my range has decreased significantly, but I can still mow
my whole lawn (3/4 acre or so) on a charge.

For the Cub Cadet, I think sealed batteries are a reasonable choice,
although for mowing it seems like gel would have been better, as David
said. That's all providing that they chose high-quality batteries and
used a proper charger. If not, they won't last, and the Cub Cadet will
end up with a lot of angry customers and a bad reputation.

Robert, if you go with Full River, please post a report on how they do.
I thought about Full River for mine, but I couldn't find anyone at the
time who knew whether this was a trustworthy battery or not, so I went
with Universal even at higher expense.

Are the drive motors available as replacement parts yet?
I'm looking to go up to 48v with an Altrax.
