Golf car and SLI batteries are commodity items, so the cost is fairly 
strongly influenced by the price of the raw materials.  The price of lead 
climbed steadily from 2008 to 2012.  It's recently fallen back, but is 
still 
around 4x what it was in 2008.

Scuttlebutt was (and is) that rapidly rising demand from China drove up 
the 
price.  I don't know how true that is, though.
