I'd say that here the asphalt driveway is wearing out the chains, rather 
than vice versa.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I found applying the chains to be a royal 
pain, especially in cold weather.  Now I just leave the chains on the old 
wheels, and bolt the wheels on for winter.  That seems much easier to me.

Besides, one of my hubs tends to loosen with use.  Changing wheels twice a 
year gives me two chances to tighten it down.
