             Expansion, and avoiding the effects thereof. Charging 
elevates 
   electrolyte temperature. If the cells are filled with room temperature 
   water to the proper level, a mess will ensue when charging warms things 
   up :(

Also the charging process increases the amount of sulfuric acid in the
electrolyte and so its volume goes up.
