<What's
the rational behind not adding water until after the batteries are
charged?> Expansion, and avoiding the effects thereof.Charging elevates electrolyte temperature. If the cells are filled with room temperature water to the proper level, a mess will ensue when charging warms things up :( OTOH, here you have four fingers and a thumb, the plates must be covered before charging commences. Add just enough water to do so then commence the charge cycle.Correct the level after charging has completed and the batteries have cooled. In colder weather, especially with batteries left outside, a brief charge cycle should be run after the electrolyte level has been corrected. The rationale behind this is to prevent water from remaining unmixed with the electrolyte . The charging process, especially during gassing, will prevent stratification and reduce the likelihood of unmixed water freezing if temperatures that low are anticipated.
