Yup! I did that as I project with HS kids when I was teaching... used a golf cart motor and a Curtis 1204 (their generic 36-48v series motor controller).
If you had a spare ET motor, you could use the 1204 anyway (in the manner that I described before, with the separate field control) ... but maybe with field weakening. OR you could use on of those sep-ex controllers... I THINK. (I haven't hooked mine up yet! Caveat emptor!)
I'll see if I can find pics anywhere... it was the kind of Craftsman that had a vertical shaft ICE behind the driver's seat.
