I stopped having these kind of problems - and headaches with those flaky 
little connectors GE used on the card edge - when I put a modern (well, 
late 
'90s era anyway) transistor controller in my ET.  

The GE controller is straightforward and easy to fix with relatively 
minimal 
electronics knowledge (even I was able to work on it), and I admit there's 
a 
lot to be said for that.  But still, it's old tech - and just plain OLD.
