I have a friend that fell for something like this. It was an electric
generator that produced more electricity than it used. Stick it in your
house for all you electrical needs and sell the remaining to the power
comp.

The sad thing was, my friend is a retired engineer for Chrysler.
He wanted me to get in at the ground floor. I said man they finally
made a perpetual motion machine!

That's rather amusing (or sad depending on whether you take it
seriously).
It strikes me that there is a corollary to Clark's third law(1) along
the lines of
For some portion of the public technology is magic.
And if case you were wondering, of course it doesn't work.
