Not any more.  They used to say they offered their material for free 
because 
they couldn't figure out how to charge for it.  A year or so ago, they 
finally figured it out.

Get the subscription.  Even though HP is now a little more oriented to 
"find 
a good vendor and/or installer" (as opposed to "scrounge the stuff and 
hack 
it up yourself") than it used to be, you won't regret it.  

You also might join the Alt-Energy list on the SJSU listserver.
