Re: (ET) Battery Question

Harold,
After I replaced the 8Th. bad battery the Landis charged the pack for about 6 Hrs. then started to cycle about once every 12 hrs.  Then when it was charging the output voltage of the charger was 44.5 volts, about once every 15 hrs., when the pack voltage dropped below 38.5.  The electrolyte has been kept above the plates.  When all batteries check under a load (about 10 hrs. after charging) at 6.53 + or - .03 volts they should be equalized.  I don't think it is a temperature thing because this has happened in the Summer, Fall, Spring, and Winter.  It seems to happen only when the tractor is setting, (or it could be just as I turn it on after it has set for a couple days).  The longest I have keep a battery is 2 years 3 months.  Can a battery just short internally while setting, or does it have current flowing?  I will be away for a couple days.  When I get back I will change battery "9" with a new battery "10" and try again.
Sincerely
Ralph

 Ralph,
Start out with good batteries.Keep the electrolyte level about 3/8" above the plates. After each use, plug it in and set the TIMER to the proper length of time. Every 5th charge or so set the timer to the full cycle to equalize the cells.
This was their advice 30 + years ago and I feel it's still good advice today.
I suspect your batteries are being undercharged.

Why would a fully charged pack check good one 1 day, then have a shorted cell in one battery the next?
I just replaced a battery with a shorted cell on a Monday. The pack is charged by a Landis controller.
The next day I ran a load test on each battery and they were about 6.53 volts at a 50 amp load.+ or - .03 volts.
The 3rd. day they checked out the same. On the morning of the 4th. day another battery had a shorted cell?
The tractor was run for about 15 minutes on the first day only. This is nine batteries in about 3 1/2 years.
Eight of them a shorted cell. Its costing me more for batteries then the cost of running my gas tractor at my
rental property.
