I've been using an "automatic" portable charger, it's actually a clone 
of the GE magneto-dynamic circuit on both my JD90 and the E12 for 
several years (too lazy to fix timers) with no problems with the sealed 
batts on the JD.  it starts at 20+ amps and tapers down to about 3
amps, has a12 hour timer for shut off.  No problems with either set of 
batts. so far.
