Re: (ET) Deep Cycle Battery Question

  Summary of earlier threads:
- Hydrometer is best measurement of a "good vs bad" battery by measuring
cell specific gravity.
- The $20 load tester from Harbor Freight also provides an indication of a
battery's capacity for load.

Loading and draining will provide amphour drain capability which varies
from battery to battery nameplate capacity - too complicated.
Good electrical connections most important.

Does anyone think it might be of value to ascertain the condition/health
of the battery, to but a good load on it and see how long it takes to
drain it down to say 11.5 volts?

I've had batteries that, days or weeks off charge, still seemed to be
gassing a bit. There's no internal mechanism I know of that will cause
disassociation of hydrogen and oxygen without external input, so I think
that this is gas trapped as bubbles in the separators that gradually works
its way out.

Come to that, it seems as if it might have been more prevalent in the
older
batteries suffering from positive grid corrosion and mossing, but I'm not
sure about that.
