I've had batteries that, days or weeks off charge, still seemed to be
gassing a bit. There's no internal mechanism I know of that will cause
disassociation of hydrogen and oxygen without external input, so I think
that this is gas trapped as bubbles in the separators that gradually works
its way out.
Come to that, it seems as if it might have been more prevalent in the
older
batteries suffering from positive grid corrosion and mossing, but I'm not
sure about that.
