Re: (ET) Why rearward mulching
I'll try....
A *real* mulcher works by cutting and recutting and recutting the grass
until it no longer has a large enough size to weight ratio for the wind
generated by the blades to keep it aloft and it drops to the ground.
OK picture this.....
you're sitting on your tractor, look at the deck, the mower motor on the
left is #1, then #2 in the middle, then #3 on the right, right at the
opening of the deck.
OK, your mowing in forward.
The grass that gets cut by #3 gets cut once and spit out the chute almost
whole.
#2 cuts the grass and passes it to #3 who cuts it again and spits it out.
#1 cuts it, passes it to #2 who cuts it and passes it to #3 who cuts it
and spits it out.
Now go in reverse....
Now when #3 cuts the grass, he passes it to #2, who passes it to #1, who
passes it back to #2, who passes it back to #3 who then spits it out the
chute.
The shortest path for the grass in reverse is from the back of #1 to the
front of #1 to #2 to #3 then out. The shortest path in forward is from the
front of #3 then out.
See why cutting in reverse results in a mulching effect?
Want a forward cutting mulcher? Close off both the back and side
chutes..... and drive slower.

Subject: (ET) ET Why rearward mulching
No one ventured to tell me why my E12 side discharge mower deck seems to
do a decent job of mulching with the tractor going in reverse (discharge
blocking plate in place and standard blades), with or without the
baffles. Whatever is happening, there should be a way to make some
changes so it will mulch going forward. Any ideas???
Thanks
