It's easy to check, you should unsolder on leg first so you're only
checking the diode. With an ohmmeter, the "forward" direction - plus on
the usual unbanded end should be almost zero resistance, the "reverse"
direction, plus on the other end should be almost she same as an open
connection.
If you don't have a meter, take a like AA battery, put a light bult in
the wire off one end, put a solid wire on the other end. The bulb
should light with the battery plus on the unbanded end, should not
light with the wires reversed.
Also, some diodes have an arrow point against a band, the plus is the
back of the point.
