(ET) Reel Mowers (was: 2 mower deck questions) (Tom Coate)

I have the gang mower pictured here
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId
=6970&productId=661&R=661

I bought it from a frustrated user of it, for $300.00. It cust 8 1/2
inches
wide. If you have a large area, with few trees, it is a solution. If you
keep it well oiled and well adjusted. If you run over a stick, it gets
caught in the rotor and you have to stop and pull it out. While you cut a
lot quickly, you do have to cut more often. As said earlier, you will need
to keep the grass short for it to work. I use mine to cut a few large,
wide
areas. Takes very little time with the E20. Then I use the powered deck
to
do the rest.

The gangs do prop up with pins, so you can mow areas that are less than 8.5
feet, but it is really a pain. Also, I built a small spot on the side of
my
woodshed to store it. As was said, storage is not easy on the thing.

But it cuts a large section, and works at virtually any speed. And it cuts
at the perfect height, and never burns the grass. One major plus for those
of us in the lake effect states: IT CUTS WET GRASS as well as it cuts dry
grass, if not better.
