Just to make sure - do you have a GE Elec-Trak or an Avco New Idea? The
ETs
do have an 18 V lift motor, but my New Idea (and all New Ideas?) has a 36 V
motor. Not sure about the Wheelhorse models. Your motor may have zorched
for a reason other than being over-volted.

Hi Chris,

How do you know that the lift motor on the New Idea is 36 volt? Is it
marked
on the motor?

I have had a New Idea EGT 150 for about 10 years, and when I got it the
lift
motor was connected to 18 volts. The only wiring diagram I have been able
to
get for the New Idea shows the motor connected to 18 vols, as near as i
can
tell (that diagram is a real mess to figure out).

About 4 years ago I had a chance to buy out all the GE tractors from a
local
owner (several E14's, an E10, and lots of parts. Last summer I sold all
the
GE's, but kept the New Idea, and I converted it to a front deck. I noticed
then
that the New Idea lift mechanism was completely different from the GE's -
a
much stronger looking unit, all around. I had to install a front "bumper"
from a
GE to make the front deck work, and had to drill extra holes in it to
mount
the New Idea lift motor and winch.

Can you tell me any more about the NI lift motor - is a replacement still
available? and was it only used on the NI, and not the later Wheel Horse?

By the way - RE: the discussion of side vs. rear discharge - my New Idea
had
an underbelly deck with side discharge - with no baffles at all. I'm
thinking
of removing the baffles from the GE deck I now have mounted in front, and
removing the plate over the side discharge opening.
