Try putting the tractor in neutral and going through the speeds while
watching the relays....I think the 5th speed is a field weakening speed
where the finger relay clicks on (same in 3rd reverse)....if it is stuck,
turn off power and gently file the contacts on both sides.....if it
doesn't contact right, the ammeter will peg if the motor has no field to
it. It also could be a poor battery or loose connection so you really
don't have the full 36+ volts.....that's why testing in neutral is a good
thing.

Did you check your battery posts immediately? They might have been very
warm from a loose connection or wire. You wouldn't have noticed with the
old pack since it was toast.
4 speeds indicate a relay problem or overloaded shunt.
