Re: (ET) E-20 Transmission Oil Recommendations

Oh Oh...I've been running that Mobil Synthetic for 2 years now in my tranny. I did have the axle bearings and seals replaced when I originally overhauled my E20. I'll keep my eyes peeled for any future leaks and let you all know.

think my trans a bit noisier than with the heavier gear oil.

Hi Jack,

This is the first mention I've seen regarding synthetic transmission oil in
ETs. I talked to Mobil some time back about using it in an older car.
They
told me that seal compatibility can be an issue. Around 1980 the seal
manufacturers changed their materials to be more compatible with
synthetics.

That casts some doubt on using it in an ET. Can anyone here specifically
say they tried it and it works fine? No leaks? I can see getting a little
more noise when using a lighter oil, but leaks are a different issue. I'd
really rather not have to replace seals.

BTW, Sta-Lube makes a handy little plunger pump that screws into the jug of
oil and pumps it through a hose into the trans. You should be able to find
them at Pep Boys, Auto Zone, etc.
