I have a gas powered tiller that runs counter rotating tines.
It does an exceptional job on first pass unbroken soil (MUCH better than my
ElecTrak tiller !!!).
So, maybe if you reversed the motor direction as well as the tines, it 
would
have worked GREAT.

On a similar note, the ElecTrak Snowblower does a great job of blowing
topsoil about 15 to 20 feet.
As others have said: Snow throw depends on (temperature) wetness, slickness
of chute, and feed rate of snow into auger (which varies with density/depth
of snow and speed of tractor).
