Look through (might stil be available online, or at a library) back issues of Home Power Magazine - they had a couple good articles about using EDTA to restore some standard (deep cycle / golf cart type) lead acid batteries.
 
I tried it with some old Trojan T-105's & it seemed to help - but I was not as scientific about the whole proess as I should have been, so I don't have data to share.

EDTA (tetrasodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate) is a chelating compound that weakens the bond between the Pb and PbSO4.  Check out the following websites.
