Thanks to all the respondents. It does appear as if a controller would be
the best way to go if the tractor is used more for transportation than
mowing. It seems I can get an Alltrax Axe-4834 for about $400 CDN. It
looks pretty straightforward to incorporate this so I agree with the
"simple" above, but I'm not sure about the "cheap" part. Controlling 50 to
100 amps of current is way beyond my limited electronics knowledge, so if
I tried to design a circuit myself, I'm sure I'd burn up several hundred
dollars in components before buying the off-the-shelf controller. I'm not
disputing the value of the Alltrax controller, but if there is a less
expensive way to add a throttle control, I'd appreciate hearing about it
(as well as the pros and cons of that method vs. something like the
Alltrax).
