Dan,
you are right that a battery powered solution today won't
easily last a full work shift. (Maybe or the heavier tractors
that can afford more battery weight, see fork lifts)
However, the tractor they choose to convert is targeted at
the home owner, who has 1-4 acres to mow, which is within
reach of a battery powered solution.
They do have a "ePower" program, which does more of this
kind of research, see:

Mostly for the larger vehicles, like the gator - where it
makes more sense I think.
