RE: (ET) rear lift
Good idea, and it was done to some extent. If you look at some older
equipment,
they mount a pulley on the end of a hydraulic rod, with a cable fixed at
one end
going around the pulley. The other end of the pulley doubles the speed or
the travel, depending on how it was set up. The actuator takes the same
time as
it did, but the cable travels twice as far, so the effective speed is
double.
That's sort of gone away with long travel cylinders. John Deere front end
loaders
in the 1940's did this.

Interesting. I had no idea the actuators had that much power.
Could thy be used with some sort of mechanical advantage (in a crude
way, think of a block & tackle in reverse)? Say, with a 10:1 advantage,
you would enjoy speeds of 4 in/sec, rather than the stock .4 in/sec.
With an output power of around 50 lbs (allowing for losses in the lock &
tackle), would that be enough to steer the tractor?

I have a 24" Von-Weiss actuator. Yep, 36V. Slow as molasses. About 60
sec. full stroke.
but it would work if you were clever. You should be able to find these
FREE if you remove
the old dish for someone. It must be able to push nearly 1000 lbs.
