The E-8 is numbered B3, B1, B2 front to back

the E-10 is numbered B3, B1, B2, B4, B6, B5 front to back.
The battery at the "Common" or the negative end (wire 4) of the pack is B5. Then comes B6, B4, B3, B1, and B2 which is at the the positive end (wire 1). For the E-8 the "Common" or the negative end (wire 4) of the pack is B3 followed by B1, then B2 which is at the positive end (wire 1). GE could have done better in numbering the batteries.
