RE: (ET) Blown motors
BTW, after repairing about 10 motors so far, the most likely failures are.
1.) Bad springs on the brushes. You didn't have this problem, but it's
very common.
2.) Loose or bad thermal interlock on top or side of motor. Shuts down
prematurely. Replace or connect interlock better.
3.) Bent armature shaft. Motor works, but vibrates and eventually
overheats. I have repaired these with a dial gauge, collet and 'junk'
lathe.
4.) Bearings. Hard to pull, but a press and bearing splitter along with
heat does the trick.
5.) Cracked or broken magnet. When pieces come off, you get the symptoms
you mention. Some people have re-glued them successfully, I have not. A
new or used shell is called for.
I have yet to see bad windings.

Bill typically gets the motors back within a week of getting them so you
won't be out of a mower for too long.

Well, whatever it is, the outboard motors on my deck are 100% toast.
They spin too slowly, and draw way too much current.
They're going to have to go to Bill Gunn land for some TLC, but in the
meantime does anyone have a spare pair of motors that I can
beg/borrow/buy? Otherwise mowing the lawn with a single deck motor is
going to be *very* slow going this summer.
Thanks
Chris
