(ET) Front Lift Motor for E-20/Wheelhorse C-185
Well I got my six new Trojan T-105 Batteries installed and wired up the
lights and front lift motor taps according to the manual. Off I go using
the snow blade to grade my gravel driveway... which does a great job
flattening the surface when dragging the blade in reverse. Half way down
the driveway the front strap brakes. No Problem... I take the strap off
the rear lift and install it. Then the 30A slo Blo fuse blows. So I
install my last spare. That to blows. Uh Oh! I super clean all the
contacts, temporarily put a wire jumper in place of the fuse, clamp on my
ammeter and read 45+ amps when toggling the lift switch. I motor back into
the garage and put it up on the jack stands, pull the front lift down and
pull the lift motor off the winch structure. I then measure the amps
again... still 45+ amps. Guess the motors bad duh!. It's a Delco
Products, Rochester, NY USA assembly with the electric motor built by
Delco Products, Dayton, Ohio, USA, Serial Number 5045631 on
3-39-73. Not being one to leave anything alone I scraped off the
waterproofing material and took it apart. There is an extremely pungent
odor of burnt electrical stuff. Armature shaft turns freely in the
bearings ruling out mechanical failure. Gear lash adjustments were nice
and smooth. Brushes looked OK but I broke the fiberboard mounting plate
holding the brushes when disassembling it. The armature looked good.
Contacts clean and shiny. And for the failure that caused the high amp
draw??? Looks (and smells) like the internal coil shorted out.
The good news is I was able to use the motor assembly from my rear lift
and it only pulls 6 amps when running (no load/light load). What a
difference.
So, Does anyone have a spare lift motor they want to get rid of? Or can
anyone identify which GMS vehicle right hand side power window motors will
work? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Bob
