It could be tricky to figure out where "1/3" was.  Probably the safest thing to do would be to start low and compare the speed of the winch running on a real 12V battery versus the controller until it was about the same.

yes that was mentioned a coupla weeks ago wasn't it.  never did hear the
results of anyone having had tried it.  I recall someone warning about the
probability that the controller may not be linear.
