Richard,
Sounds kind of like what was happening to me with
my E20 recently. The problem was intermittent. I would step on the pedal and the
tractor would start to go and then "click", power gage drop out to zero, and
tractor immediately stops. Sometimes I could just release the pedal and press it
again and I would be ok for a while and then it would happen again. At other
times I would have to do the "let up - press again" thing several times
before it would stay engaged. Sometimes all I would get is the click with no
tractor lurching/bucking. Sometimes when it was working, the problem got worse
when the tractor was under load - like when going up a hill. Had me stumped for
a bit, but finally figured it out to be one of the 4 relays behind the
instrument panel. Can't remember which one at the moment, but I THINK it was the
forward relay, but MAY have been the reverse. Am not familiar with the E12,
but I wouldn't be surprised if it uses the same relays. Swapping out with a new
or good used one should confirm whether that is the problem or not. Be aware
though, that a loose connector or bad wire to the relay can cause the same
symptom. I'd bet on the relay itself though, as they are typically orignal and
the contacts in pretty bad shape or out of alignment. If you don't have any
other relays on hand, then swap between the ones you have already on the panel.
If one is bad, your symptoms will change. If not, they won't!
Hope this helps!

the belt, no cards found in E12.
Thanks guys but its not the belt. The power use gauge
fluctuates in perfect harmony with the bucking of the tractor. Opened up
the behind the dash where the fuses are but found no card(s) on my E12.
Either I'm looking in the wrong place or there are no cards. Does
anyone have an E12 service manual and/or any ideas on where to go from
here? Is it a bad connection somewhere in the field weakening
circuit or possibly something else? Thanks for any specific suggestions I
might be able to follow and try out. Richard "Zack"

You will need the service manual from Bill Gunn or ask on the mail
group. My E12 has no circuit cards. If I get a chance I will look in the
service manual and try to figure something out for you. I need to fix My
E12 as I blew a diode (again) that's in the reversing circuit. The
tractor only runs in reverse right now. The E12 is my back up tractor
and I have not needed it this summer. I use the batteries in it as a
backup for the UPS system for the house. I have a cord and connector
system to connect between the tractor and the UPS battery bank. They all
use the same golf cart batteries so it's a good match.
With out the service drawing it's hard to figure anything out about the
wiring on the tractors. Even with the drawings it's still hard!

Hi Dwight,
Thanks for the response. I am a novice at this having just gotten the
E12 in June and have little background experience.
Anyway, went out and tested it and yes, the load meter bobs up and down
corresponding to the movement of the tractor.
Was able to look under and see that the drive motor pulley was clear of
the wiring, so that, at least, eliminates that.
As to field voltage, I went to the "Home Owner's Service Manual" that
came with the tractor and tried to find info on field weakening. Found
some info for the E12S that shows a card #1 and a FW connection. But
when I opened my E12, I couldn't find the card #1. Doesn't look like the
E12 has such a card or its located some place else.
Can you give me any specifics on where to look for a loose connection?
I think the reverse relay should be on the back of the dash panel on the
left side (away from the speed control). What do I do with this reverse
relay when I find it?
Don't be afraid to insult my intelligence by being overly specific.
ASSUME THAT I KNOW NOTHING.
Thanks very much,

Zack,
What is the reading on the load meter? Is it going up and down with
the
jerks? It may be a wiring problem or a contactor/relay problem. I
wonder
if your field voltage is steady. The reversing relay may be the place
to
start. Also is the motor drive pulley wearing through the wiring
harness under the frame?

My tractor bucks some. That is, the ride is herky-jerky. It seems
worse in reverse than forward.
Is there some adjustment I can make?
Did I tighten the drive belt too much maybe?
Thanks for any advice you may be able to give.
