Check the manual for the controller, it may have acceleration and
deceleration adjustments that you can make. The 4QD controllers do, don't

Some (most?) do indeed have acceleration ramps to prevent rearing, skidding, and/or excessive battery current. In fact even the original ET resistor step controller had a sort of ramp - a time delay that stepped through the speeds gradually even if you rammed the speed lever all the way to the top.
