Mobil makes a transmission version of their synthetic oil.  It is 
'lighter' (lower viscosity) than most 
transmission oils, but does NOT 'break down' into the component parts like 
a blend, so the viscosity 
does not rise significantly over time.

Mr. Landis can answer for himself, but his controller uses set point to 
determine whether to charge or not.  
As battery temperature changes, and as the cells equalize, the voltage 
will change and the set point will 
be passed.  The charger will indeed cycle a number of times.

Darryl, your message has me curious. What advice are you talking about? Can
you give me specific message numbers? I searched the archives of this list
and could not find anything on the topic. I tried using the keywords 'oil
change', 'transmission', and 'mobil', without finding anything relevant.

I bought an E-20 last year, and I have been using it to mow my yard for the
first time this year. It works well in general. However, it seems sluggish,
and the gearshift lever is quite balky. It always takes me several tries to
shift gears. Your experience makes me think it needs an oil change.

By the way, I am the one who recently posted questions about installing the
Landis controller. I am pleased to report that it is working properly. When
I plug my tractor in after mowing, I can hear the charger come on. It shuts
off after a few minutes, and then starts again soon after -- just as
advertised.

Well, I took the boards advice.  I changed the fluid
in my rear end last night.  Although it didn't look
too bad, I suspect it's been in there for the 30 odd
years the tractor is old.  Replaced it with Mobil 1
synthetic.  Wow, what a difference.  Now I need new
brakes!

I had to jack up the rear end to get all 64 ounces in.
 Before I drained the old oil, I took the top plug
out.  Nothing ran out.  So it was low to begin with.
I also figured out that the factory put that rear bar
in the way too.  Oh well, if it was too easy we'd all
have our wives changing it!  Thanks guys for the
advice.
