The corrosion is caused by the electrolyte finding
it's way past the caps and post seals. Some batteries have more of a problem
with the post to case sealing area than others.
Keeping the electrolyte at the
minimum necessary level can reduce this concern. "Just enough to cover the
plates." Overcharging should also be avoided, since gassing can cause a
mist of electrolyte to escape from the vents.
My weapon of choice for cleaning
the battery tops is plain old household ammonia. It leaves no residue, as
baking soda can.
High quality batteries, such as
Trojan®, can be used for several years, with no terminal cleaning needed at
all.
