I'm sure they're not cheap (probably $300-400 list), but Curtis 
Instruments 
makes models rated for 24 or 36 volts nominal.  Model 1400E is a 300 watt 
unit, and 1410E is a 200 watt.  These are designed for use in forklifts 
and 
golf cars and have a reputation for being pretty sturdy and reliable.

If I knew of anything cheaper it would be in my tractor right now!  <g>
