The variable control sounds like something I also was thinking of, dunno
about efficiency, running at constant (full) speed is probably most
efficient. Forward - reverse would be nice it the motor brushes are
designed for it.
Meanwhile, at my age, if it aint broke, don't mess with it is kinda
where I'm at. (:-')
