The E12 I have looks like it had three speeds: The first two had a "big 
hunking resistor" in series to get going, then full power to the motor.

What kind of speed control do the elec-tracs use? Variable volatge on the
field windings? Stepped volatges off the batteries? Big hunking resistors

hope not, the waste!)? Primitive pulse based throttle?

I remember the early citicars had a set of relays. Speed 1 was run the car
at 48v. Speed two was run the batteries in parallel for 24 volts. Speed 3
was run in parallel with a big load resistor. Not very efficient, but it 
was
early 70's tech. By 76 they went to the first gen pulse systems, but the ET
was out of production by then....
