Larry,
Watch your step with those Taiwanese inverters. I am an electrical
engineer who has owned a few different brands and types over the years.
The latest designs with FET switching are some of the more sophisticated
consumer products, in terms of design and function. out there. I wouldn't
touch a cheap imported inverter from a company I have never heard of (Tops
Mate International???) with a 10 foot pole!
I highly recommend that you buy from a well known domestic supplier of
which there are several. I have owned a Trace 2kW inverter for use at my
off grid cabin for almost 10 years and it has flawlessly run lights, hand
power tools, a water pump, an express machine, toaster and a microwave
oven. Trace makes units that take 36 VDC input. My only complaint is the
company will not provide schematics so I can only guess at the details of
their circuit.
Any one doing serious research on inverters should consult the Home Power
magazine archives. These may only be available on CD but will be worth the
cost.
If you want to design your own, more power to you. It would be a very
interesting project but will require hundreds or thousands of hours of
design and testing to even come close to the performance of the
commercially available units.

One subject that constantly comes up is inverters. The GE's are
not easy to find, and the ability to use simple 110V 60Hz devices
remotely would make many people happy. Now I WAS thinking of
designing a fresh solid-state inverter (and I may still do so) but
I really don't have time plus not that many people have access to
inexpensive board making facilities or power transformers. So I
did a bit of web/e-mail research. I found a Taiwanese company
selling 12/24/48 V 50/60Hz inverters, and asked about 36V. Here is
the e-mail and reply. Lots of 36V. If there is enough interest,
we might get a 'deal'. No promises, just potential. I haven't done
importation before....
