Re: (ET) "Mower Motor Rebuilding"

Hi,
Here is my 2 cents worth on the motor sealing. I have seen the sealer on
screw
heads on the later "fat" motors and recommend sealing that again to reduce
moisture from getting in from the bottom of the motor and minimize
corrosion of
the screw in that lower end cap. I would seal the lower end cap but not
the
upper. I think that sealing the motor top completely would be harmful,
rather
than helpful. I say this because the motor is not sealed very well at the
blade end of the shaft. Any moisture from wet grass or from hosing out the
deck may get in past the shaft seal (rubber ring). If that happens, the
moisture will always condense in the upper bearing cap, no way to get out.
With it unsealed on top the moisture has a place to get out. The heat of
the
motor during operation would evaporate the moisture quite fast, so I think
it
is best to leave it breath.
