Good advise on the diodes, infinity one way, short
the other. From the manual, be careful if checking the charger voltages
when operating "unloaded", the winding feeding the capacitor can be nasty.
If you just put a couple of house incandescent bulbs across the battery
terminals it'l stabilize the output, don't forget, you will be measuring a
series of waveforms all on the plus side so most meters won't read correctly
