Many thanks for the tips and clues. I managed to figure out the answer they
were looking for from the cross answers. Normally I run out of steam on the
Times crosswords by Wednesday but, well, I have had more time to let the
clues percolate recently.

Still, I think RINGER was the correct answer, no matter how many squares
are available. There is so much that Buggles have yet to learn. (If
non-Magic are Muggles, then are non Bellringers Buggles??)
