Re: Thought experiment

One other thought: Might it be possible to have us organize an AGM, but have Groton physically host it?  If they have major summer programs, that wouldn't work; but if they don't then they might have dorm space, and in any case, fewer neighbors to complain if we ring for ten hours straight!

Hi all!

Whatever you decide on let me know and I'd love to come up to help out! I do agree that it should be before Labor Day to make it easier for students. Especially if we are going to ring at Groton, I imagine tower time would really be only possible during the summer. I think it would be definitely worth it to have a trip out to Groton or down to Orleans for some 10 bell experience, and we could organize rides/carpooling in both directions for all of those interested. Also, those who don't want to ring on 10 (or go to the course, if that's what the extra tower occasion is for) could stay in Boston.

I was thinking even further, like Smith, which is reasonable to ring, or Orleans, which I haven't rung at. I agree, Hingham isn't a place anyone would volunteer to ring several days straight.

In the past we stayed at Smith dorms for an AGM, I think?

Depends on your definition of "driving distance".  Groton School's about 50 minutes away; Hingham's closer, but I'm given to understand that the bells there are somewhat difficult for inexperienced ringers.

Sorry to barge in. If Boston did host an event, is there another tower within driving distance that could host the ringing course, where maybe there aren't so many neighbors?

I support this idea, although am less keen on a ringing course... I think multiple days on the bells at Advent is asking too much of the neighbors. Can commit to help.

Also, please don't community to a price. Last time we went pretty far in the hole.

I'm willing to help with this if it's the Aug 25-26 weekend.  I'd prefer that it did have a ringing course. I'm not willing to do it unless other people also help, so pipe up now!

I meant to write this yesterday, but forgot.
John B asked once why it has been so long since Boston hosted an AGM. I have been thinking about it, and wonder whether there would be any support for a very stripped-down weekend similar to the one in 2008 that was a celebration of the 25 years since the rehanging at Old North. What if we offere just a weekend, not a ourse. Only the usual ringing times at ON. Afternoon ringing each day at the Advent, lots of handbell opportunities. Working around AA so that we could have a dinner of potluck food in Moseley Hall.  Those of us who have space could host people, otherwise we'd suggest Air b n b. No registration fee? No  swag. No packets. My point here is to see if we can make it cost almost nothing, to make up for the fact that we are sort of at a corner of our ringing continent, so transportation is an expensive nuisance.
Thoughts? If a site is needed for next year's AGM, should I offer this idea?
