Kurt was a Smith ringer who visited Boston a couple times and we just rang with him at Groton last weekend. Very sad news. Kurt Ward (a Smith ringer) died earlier this week. It was a workplace related accident that took place while he and some other workers were uncoupling freight cars at the Deerfield rail yard on Monday evening. Kurt joined the Smith band in Spring 2009 and had made steady progress as a ringer especially in the last 6 months when we'd been able to find a practice time that fitted in with his work schedule. He was warm and good natured, always willing to offer help when something needed to be done around the tower. There will be a memorial service tomorrow (Sat July 17) at 2 pm. It will take place at St. Peter's, Weston, MA (320 Boston Post Road). The family have said that they would be very happy for anyone who knew Kurt through ringing to attend. Please pass this message on to anyone we may have missed. (For those of you in Northampton, Elizabeth and I will be going if anyone needs a ride.
