Re: coordinating NAGCR Dues

Hi Mira-

John and I are December people, so it wouldn't change our schedule, just who we paid.  My experience with paying as a group was that in Chicago, it was harder for me than paying individually.  Everyone needed to attend on the same night as Elisabeth Trumpler, who collected the money, and to have brought checkbooks or count on Elisabeth to keep track of cash transactions.  As in Boston, there were some folks who rarely attended, and some students who rarely had much money on them.  Sending dues in sometimes got held up because Elisabeth was waiting for money from someone and we'd all end up wondering whether we'd renewed or not given the delays.  I like sending a check to Tom Miller directly and getting a personal e-mail response right away.  I know John and I could send the check to you instead, since we're not that likely to be at practices these days, but it seems simpler to send it straight to its destination.

Perhaps a happy medium if you're willing to save Tom Miller some work is to collect from those you see regularly in December, being prepared to take some fees in cash to save yourself work nagging people to bring checkbooks, and to let anyone who doesn't see you by a given date renew individually.  Since only Tom would know who'd sent in checks directly, the work of reminding people who are overdue might still end up falling to him, but you might save him some work reminding everyone beforehand.
