[Assistant-faculty] help needed

Dear colleagues - physicists and astronomers,

Help! I just read the notice about when the first freshmen advising
session is scheduled, Friday Sept.2. This was the first notice. Somehow I
forgot about the fact that I was assigned to be a freshmen adviser again.
I hadn't seen any notice until yesterday - nothing all summer.

I will be away at a special meeting (Transversity 2011) on an island in
Croatia. This is an all week meeting involving my specialty in particle
physics. I am scheduled to speak on Friday, Sept.2. I cannot back out now.
All the arrangements are made. I am returning Sunday Sept.4.

I've informed Laura Doane, who coordinates these advising schedules. She
tells me that the roster of my students includes those interested in
physics. She says, "Yes, absolutely, a substitution is possible. I have
assigned students to you based – as much as possible – on some expressed
interest in pursuing a concentration in Physics. Do you think it might be
possible for some of your colleagues to meet with any of them on that
Friday? Or Thursday would be workable, too. All first-year A&S students
will register on Saturday, September 3."

Can you spare some time on either of those days to meet with some of these
freshmen? There are 14 of them. I would be extremely grateful. Since
everyone has done these advising sessions, it should not be too onerous.
There are 2 upperclassmen assigned to help out. In my experience these
upperclassmen can do a lot of the advising work before the freshmen come
into your office.

Please let me know if you can help.

Appreciatively yours,
Gary
