All, It seems that the electrical work that is being discussed has been moved back due to delays. They are now anticipating the
full shutdown of 4 Colby Street on Saturday, July 30th beginning at about 8am and lasting 6-8 hours. No one indicated that such a shutdown would be a problem…so, please plan accordingly for this new date.
I will send a reminder email as appropriate. Shannon Shannon R. Landis, MEd Department Manager Physics & Astronomy Tufts University 212 College Ave. Medford, MA 02155 (617) 627-5360 (617) 627-3878 fax Shannon Landis Tufts edu From: Isenstein, Betsy
Pardon my error below; we would like to schedule the 4 Colby Street shutdown for
Saturday, July 30th. Betsy From: Isenstein, Betsy
Hi All, National Grid informed me today that they are running slightly behind on their cable replacement work on Harvard Street. Additionally, they have a safety rule in effect that prevents
their employees from doing this type of work when the outdoor air temperature is over 90 degrees (unless it is an emergency). Very hot weather is expected this week, so they anticipate that the schedule will slip even further. All of the Harvard Street cable
replacement work must be complete before the 4 Colby work can begin. National Grid is confident that the Harvard Street cabling will be complete next week, so we can schedule the 4 Colby Street shutdown for
Saturday, June 30th. The shutdown duration will be 6-8 hours and will begin at about
8 am. Please let me know if this date is acceptable. Once I hear from each department, I will send a confirming email. National Grid cannot return 4 Colby Street and the main campus
to our dedicated electric circuit (with two back-ups) until this work is complete, so we are anxious to get this done. We appreciate your patience and cooperation and apologize for the change in plans! Betsy -- Tufts University From: Isenstein, Betsy Hi All, I am sure you are aware that 4 Colby Street experienced a power outage on Sunday morning. The outage lasted about an hour and also impacted the main campus. During that hour, National Grid was able to switch
to one of our two back-up circuits. The outage was caused by a cable failure in the vicinity of Harvard Street. They have since repaired the cable, but have not transferred load back yet. Upon inspection, they found evidence of cable deterioration. This
particular section (from the intersection of Main and Harvard Street to 4 Colby Street) dates back to the construction of 4 Colby Street (circa 1991).
National Grid has decided to replace this section of cable as soon as possible. In fact, some of the preliminary work began today. Most likely, they will begin to pull cable on Friday. Both 4 Colby Street
and the main campus will remain on the back-up circuit until this work is complete and tested. Most of this cable is above ground and the replacement is relatively simple. Closest to 4 Colby Street, however, the cable goes underground and into the switchgear located right off Harvard Street in front
of 4 Colby. In order to replace that section of cable, it will be necessary to arrange for a
6-8 hour electrical shutdown of the 4 Colby Street facility. The preferred shutdown date is
Saturday, July 23rd. If this date presents a particular hardship, please let me know as soon as possible. We have a little bit of flexibility. The alternate day/time would be toward the end of next week (July 20 or 21 perhaps) starting at 5
or 6 pm and working through the night until complete. We do apologize for the inconvenience; this is an important opportunity to replace an aging piece of cable before it fails. Please note that the building generator will be available during the outage. Should
you have questions, please feel free to contact me. Betsy -- Betsy Isenstein Director, Facilities Technical Services Tufts University 520 Boston Avenue Medford, MA 02155 617.627.3704 p 617.627.3598 f |
