``Heavy Elements in QSOs' Clues to Star Formation and Galaxy
        Evolution at High Redshifts''

Abstract:

Emission and absorption lines in QSO spectra indicate that the gas
near QSOs is rich in heavy elements, with "metal" to hydrogen abundance
ratios often higher than the solar value. If the metal enrichment is caused
by normal stellar evolution in the QSO host galaxies, then those galaxies
(or at least the galactic nuclei where QSOs reside) must be highly evolved
before the QSOs "turn on" or become observable. In particular, most of the
gas must already have been converted to stars and stellar remnants just
a few billion years after the Big Bang. I will discuss the evidence for high
metal abundances in QSOs and the implications for galaxy formation
and evolution.
