Abstract:

We have come a long way from "spherical cloud" models of the interstellar
medium, but we may not be exactly sure where we are. It is now possible to
map out density, temperature, and velocity structure in the ISM on scales
ranging from hundreds of astronomical units up to hundreds of parsecs, and
to paint an intricate physical picture of the ISM with these measurements.
In some cases, we can add magnetic field measurements and complicate the
picture further. My talk will focus on how the current view of the ISM fits
in with our understanding of turbulent phenomena, magnetic waves,
gravitational instabilities, and star formation. Using examples taken from
radio, infrared, and optical wavelength studies, I will show that there is a
need for (new) quantitative measures of structure which allow data and
physical models to be compared more directly.
