CONDUCT IN THE LABORATORY
Adherence to the guidelines listed below will assure smooth functioning in the lab. This list deals
specifically with issues which have arisen in the last several years; it does not presume to be complete. As
always, the guiding principle of respect and consideration for both the living and the dead, must prevail.
-
1. AT ALL TIMES, CADAVERS MUST BE TREATED WITH
PROFESSIONALISM AND DECENCY
-
2. No part of any cadaver, including dental restorations, may be removed from the Gross
Anatomy Laboratory for any purpose
3. Parts of the cadaver must remain at the assigned table.
-
4. Models, demonstration skeletons or any other teaching aids are NOT to be taken from the
gross anatomy laboratory.
-
5. Care of the cadaver and the gross anatomy laboratory is crucial to both the quality of the
dissection and the smooth running of the course.
-
a. Sharp objects, such as used scalpel blades, are to be disposed of in specifically
labeled boxes ONLY. If you are unfamiliar with the attachment/detachment of the
blade, ask your instructor for a demonstration. Improper handling of a scalpel
blade is the leading cause of student injury in the lab.
-
b. Towels, rubber gloves (etc.) should never be left on the table; rather, they should
be placed in the appropriate waste containers. Such items should never be placed
in the body tissue receptacles located at each table.
-
c. As will be discussed further in lecture, it is crucial to keep the tissues being
dissected moist and covered when not in use. Instructions for this procedure will be
given in the lab.
6. The lab is open to students during library hours and may be opened additional hours over
holiday weekends by special request to the Course Director.
7. The lab may be closed at any time in the following circumstances:
-
8. While bringing guests to the laboratory is normally discouraged, permission for special
cases MUST be obtained from the course instructors.
-
9. The use of all electronic equipment, including cameras, video and audio tape
player/recorders and PDA=s is forbidden in the gross anatomy laboratory.
10. No eating or smoking in the laboratory.
