Case for Week #13

One of your patients, a 49 year-old female electrical contractor, mentions to you that she just had an CT and ultrasound scan of her abdomen. Her physician had found an abnormal structure located left of mid-line in the upper part of her abdomen. The scans revealed normal kidneys, adrenals and spleen but demonstrated a fluid-filled sac pushing forward between the stomach and the transverse colon. Although this structure was limiting her ability to take a deep breath, it did not move during respiration. She was told that the diagnosis was a cyst-like structure associated with the pancreas and asks whether:

  1. you have ever heard of this? (The answer will now be yes - see above)
  2. you could explain how a cyst can develop from the pancreas and end up being located between the stomach and the transverse colon?
